Egg Foo Young Recipe
Egg Foo Young is a delicious Chinese dish that’s simple to make and uses basic ingredients. Today, I’m excited to share this tasty recipe with you.
Egg Foo Young is essentially an omelet, but it’s more than just an omelet. It has a soft, tender interior and crispy, golden edges. It’s often served with a sauce that adds depth and a touch of flavor. Today, I’m sharing my family’s traditional recipe. Let's dive into making Egg Foo Young together!
1.About Egg Foo Young
Egg Foo Young is a traditional dish from Guangdong, known for its golden color and crispy exterior. It is considered one of the classic American-Chinese dishes alongside chop suey.
It is said that Egg Foo Young was invented by a Chinese chef in America, making it well-suited to American tastes. However, the preparation of Egg Foo Young in China differs. The version I'm sharing today is one I've developed through extensive experimentation, combining elements that appeal to both Chinese and American palates.
2.Ingredients and Substitutes
Egg Foo Young can be made with a variety of ingredients, such as shrimp, ground pork, or beef. Here are the ingredients and their substitutes that I use for making Egg Foo Young:
Eggs: Eggs are essential for Egg Foo Young and cannot be substituted.
Additional Ingredients: I use Mytilus edulis (mussels). If you don't like mussels, you can substitute them with clams, shrimp, or omit them entirely. I also use scallions for added flavor.
Seasonings: Common Chinese seasonings such as salt, light soy sauce, regular soy sauce, and cornstarch.
These ingredients can be found on Amazon or at Chinese grocery stores.
3.Is Egg Foo Young an Authentic Chinese Dish?
As mentioned earlier, Egg Foo Young is a Western-style Chinese dish, similar to other Chinese-American takeout favorites like chow mein and beef with broccoli. In China, there are stuffed omelets, but they usually aren’t topped with the thick brown gravy that’s common with Egg Foo Young. Instead, they are typically drizzled with soy sauce.
4.What Kind of Pan Should Be Used to Cook Egg Foo Young?
Generally, there isn’t a specific pan required for cooking Egg Foo Young. You can use a regular frying pan, a non-stick pan, or a cast-iron skillet—whatever you have at home will work. The most important thing is to control the heat to avoid burning the food.
5.How to Make Egg Foo Young?
You will find the complete step-by-step recipe below, but here is a brief overview of the process for making homemade Shrimp Egg Foo Young:
1. Mix Mytilus edulis (mussels), eggs, and scallions together.
2. Heat oil in a frying pan, form the mixture into patties, and fry until golden brown.
3. Prepare the sauce on the stove and simmer until thickened.
4. Spoon the sauce over the Egg Foo Young and serve.
6.How to Store
Generally, I recommend eating fresh food, so if you choose to make Egg Foo Young at home, it's best to make just enough to eat in one sitting. This dish is not difficult to prepare, so you can easily make it whenever you want to enjoy it.
