1.Regarding Hot and sour dumpling soup:
Hot and sour dumpling soup, also known as sour soup dumplings, originates from China and boasts a long history and unique preparation techniques.
The history of sour soup dumplings can be traced back to the Northern and Southern Dynasties and the Tang Dynasty, when dumplings were already quite refined. In Xi'an, on the streets, this type of food is mainly operated by Hui ethnic group, characterized by its unique sour soup preparation. The vinegar for this soup has undergone special processing, boiled with water and various spices, to eliminate the bitterness of vinegar and increase its sweetness and sourness.
Today's recipe is a simplified version that doesn't involve as many spices, but it still captures the distinctive hot and sour flavors. Fans of this dish should give it a try.
2.Regarding dumplings:
Dumplings are a type of delicacy made by rolling dough into thin wrappers and filling them with various ingredients. They come in a wide variety of types and shapes.
When choosing dumplings, you can either make them yourself or buy them ready-made. They are typically available at Asian supermarkets or online, usually found in the refrigerated section and sealed in plastic packaging. When purchasing, it's advisable to check the expiration date to ensure it's within the valid period.
I have ready-made dumplings prepared here. If you're interested in making dumplings yourself, you can browse the homemade dumpling recipe I introduced earlier. I hope it will be helpful to you.
3.Preparation of hot and sour soup:
You'll need ingredients such as scallions, garlic, soy sauce, rice vinegar, chili sauce, and other seasonings.
First, finely chop the garlic and scallions. Then, mix soy sauce, rice vinegar, and chili sauce together until well blended.
Next, bring water to a boil in a pot. Add the prepared seasoning mixture into the pot and bring it to a boil. This completes the hot and sour soup, which has a rich and flavorful taste.
Hot and sour soup can be adjusted according to personal taste preferences. If you prefer it more sour, you can increase the amount of vinegar. For those who enjoy spiciness, you can add more chili sauce. There's no fixed ratio—it's all about adjusting to suit your own palate.
4.Cooking time for dumplings:
The cooking time for dumplings generally ranges from 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the dumplings, the type of filling, and the cooking method used. Vegetarian dumplings may require shorter cooking times, around 10 to 12 minutes. For dumplings with meat filling, it typically takes 15 to 20 minutes to cook through.
To ensure dumplings are thoroughly cooked, it's recommended to gently press the dumpling skin during steaming. If the skin quickly springs back when pressed, it indicates that the dumplings are fully cooked.
5.The way the dumplings are steamed:
The recommended way to steam dumplings is to start with high heat for about 5 minutes until the water in the steamer boils. Then, reduce the heat to medium-low and continue steaming. This method ensures that the dumplings are fragrant, tender, and distinct in shape, offering a delicious texture.
Hot and sour dumpling soup differs slightly from the way we typically eat boiled dumplings. Normally, boiled dumplings are cooked and then removed from the water, eaten by dipping them in vinegar. In contrast, hot and sour dumpling soup is enjoyed more like wonton soup. First, a tangy broth base is prepared, and then the cooked dumplings are added into the soup. When eating, one starts by savoring the appetizing hot and sour broth, followed by enjoying dumplings with thin skins and generous fillings. It's a satisfying combination of eating and drinking. Now, let's take a look at how hot and sour dumpling soup is made!
INGREDIENTS
MAIN INGREDIENTS
- 150g pork dumplings
SEASONINGS
- 15g soy sauce
- 30g rice vinegar
- 10g chili sauce
- 10g scallions
- 10g garlic
DIRECTIONS
STEP 1
Prepare the ingredients and wash any items that need cleaning before use.
STEP 2
Finely chop 10g of scallions and garlic. Prepare a seasoning bowl and pour in 15g of soy sauce, 30g of rice vinegar, and 10g of chili sauce. Stir the mixture until it's well combined.
STEP 3
In a pot, add water and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, add 150g of pork dumplings and cook them over medium-low heat until they are fully cooked. Remove the dumplings from the water.
Tip:
①Do not add dumplings to the water too early; wait until the water boils before placing them in the pot. When cooking dumplings, make sure to stir them occasionally to prevent sticking to the pot.
②When adding dumplings to the pot, it's important not to let the water boil continuously. After adding the dumplings and the water starts boiling again, add some cold water. Repeat this process twice before removing the dumplings. If the water boils continuously, the dumplings are more likely to break open.
STEP 4
In another pot, add a small amount of boiling water and pour in the prepared seasoning mixture along with the chopped scallions and garlic. Heat until it comes to a boil.
STEP 5
Once the cooked dumplings are added and brought to a boil, your bowl of hot and sour dumpling soup is ready to serve.
